Why a bone graft?

Missing bone can be rebuilt

After an extraction or a long period without a tooth, the jaw naturally resorbs: the bone volume decreases, sometimes making direct implantation impossible. Bone grafting fills the site with bone tissue or biosynthetic substitutes.

In Tunisia, this procedure is systematically proposed before implant placement when the 3D scan reveals insufficient bone. The surgeon chooses the technique adapted to your situation: bone addition, guided regeneration or sinus elevation.

Good news: in many cases, the graft and the implant placement can be performed during the same stay, which avoids a second trip.

When is a graft needed?

  • Tooth missing for more than 6 months
  • Visible bone resorption on scan
  • Old periodontitis with bone loss
  • Bone height < 10 mm (sinus close)
  • Recent extraction with fractured bone
  • Multiple implants on resorbed site
Surgical techniques

The 3 types of bone graft

Each clinical situation corresponds to a specific technique. The surgeon chooses after analysis of your 3D CBCT scan.

01
Guided Bone Regeneration
GBR — Most common technique

Filling the bone defect with a biosynthetic substitute (deproteinized bovine bone or synthetic biomaterial), covered with a resorbable membrane that protects the graft during healing.

Indication: moderate resorption, recent extraction site, localized defect.

€350/ site €800 – 1,200 in Europe
02
Sinus Lift
Upper jaw elevation

Technique specific to the posterior upper jaw. The maxillary sinus floor is raised to create space and allow implant placement in a naturally low-bone area.

Indication: residual bone < 5–8 mm under the sinus.

€500/ sinus €1,200 – 2,000 in Europe
03
Block Graft
Autologous bone — Complex cases

Taking a bone block from the patient themselves (chin or jaw ramus) and screwing it onto the site to be reconstructed. Very reliable results but longer healing.

Indication: severe resorption, large reconstruction.

Quote €2,000 – 4,000 in Europe

Is a bone graft necessary?

Here are the most common situations where a bone graft is recommended before implantation.

Tooth missing for several years

Without mechanical stimulation, the bone gradually resorbs. After 2 to 3 years of absence, the bone height and width may be insufficient to accommodate a standard implant. A GBR 3-6 months before the implant restores the necessary volume.

Severe periodontitis

Chronic periodontitis destroys bone tissue around teeth. Before any implantation on an affected site, decontamination and bone reconstruction are essential to ensure long-term implant stability.

Extraction and immediate implant

During extraction, alveolar walls may be fractured or too thin. Immediate filling with a biomaterial prevents resorption and prepares the site for an implant within 3-6 months.

Upper molar area

The proximity of the maxillary sinus in the upper molar area often limits the bone height available. A sinus lift is then necessary to create 10-12 mm of useful height for a stable implant.

Process

Bone graft treatment process

From consultation to final smile, here are the key steps of your treatment.

01

Pre-operative assessment

3D CBCT scan to precisely evaluate the available bone volume and choose the appropriate technique. Included in the quote.

02

Surgical procedure

Under local anaesthesia (1-2 h). Placement of biomaterial and regeneration membrane. Resorbable sutures. You return to the hotel the same day.

03

Healing period

3 to 6 months depending on graft volume. Follow-up by your dentist at home with control X-rays. The bone consolidates.

04

Implant placement

2nd stay in Tunisia for implant placement on the regenerated site. In some cases, graft and implant are placed during the same stay.

Good to know: in many cases (small graft, localized GBR), the graft and implant placement can be done in the same stay in Tunisia, reducing travel to just two trips.

Price comparison

Bone graft price: Tunisia vs Europe

Procedure Tunisia Europe Savings
Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)€350€800 – 1,200-60%
Sinus lift€500€1,200 – 2,000-70%
Block bone graftQuote€2,000 – 4,000-50%
Pre-op 3D CBCT scanFree€150 – 300-100%

In summary: dental bone grafting in Tunisia is the solution to rebuild insufficient bone volume before placing implants. At €350 (GBR), i.e. 4× cheaper than in Europe, you benefit from CE-certified biosynthetic materials, an included regeneration membrane and a free 3D CBCT scan. Bone graft FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does a dental bone graft take?

A simple bone graft takes from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on type (localised addition, sinus lift, or block graft). The healing period is 3 to 6 months before implant placement.

Is a bone graft painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is painless. Moderate pain and swelling may occur in the first 2 to 4 days, managed with standard painkillers. Most patients resume activities within 48 hours.

How much does a bone graft cost in Tunisia?

A simple bone graft costs €320 in Tunisia, compared to €800-1,500 in France. A sinus lift is offered at €500 (vs €1,500-3,000 in France). All materials and consultation are included.

Is a bone graft always necessary before an implant?

No. A graft is only necessary in cases of insufficient bone. A 3D CT scan (CBCT) determines whether your bone volume is sufficient for direct implant placement. About 30-40% of patients do not need a graft.

What materials are used for the bone graft?

We use CE-certified materials: Bio-Oss by Geistlich (xenogeneic substitute), collagen membranes, or autologous bone harvested from the patient. None of these materials are of GMO origin.

Graft + implant same stay? Yes, in many cases (localized GBR, moderate volume), the graft and implantation can be done in a single stay. The surgeon decides based on the 3D scan. Otherwise, allow 3-6 months of healing between the two procedures.
