Who can get a dental implant?
The vast majority of healthy adults are eligible for dental implants. There are, however, absolute contraindications (rare, permanent) and relative contraindications (temporary or manageable). A medical review and a 3D scan decide on a case-by-case basis.
⛔ Absolute (rare)
Certain serious uncontrolled diseases, heavy immunosuppressive treatments or IV bisphosphonates (osteonecrosis risk).
⚠️ Relative
Heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, insufficient bone, poor hygiene: manageable before surgery.
🕒 Temporary
Pregnancy, active local infection, under 18 (growth not finished): you simply wait for the right time.
✅ The assessment decides
A CBCT scan and a medical questionnaire determine your real eligibility, often more favourable than expected.
The main risk factors (and their solutions)
| Factor | Impact | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Smoking | Failure risk ×2-3 | Reduce/quit before and after |
| Diabetes | Slower healing | Balance blood sugar |
| Insufficient bone | Lack of anchorage | Bone graft / zygomatic implant |
| Periodontitis | Gum infection | Treat before placement |
Insufficient bone is almost never a permanent obstacle: it is restored by a bone graft, or bypassed with a zygomatic implant.
Implant failure: is it common?
No. The success rate exceeds 97%. Failure, when it occurs, is most often linked to peri-implantitis (an infection preventable by hygiene) or to uncontrolled risk factors. A failed implant can usually be replaced after healing.

Who cannot get a dental implant?
Absolute contraindications are rare: certain serious uncontrolled diseases, heavy immunosuppressive treatments or intravenous bisphosphonates. Most other situations are manageable.
Can you get an implant if you smoke?
Yes, but tobacco clearly increases the failure risk. Reducing or quitting before and after surgery is strongly advised.
Is diabetes a contraindication?
Not if it is well controlled. Uncontrolled diabetes slows healing and must be stabilised before placement.
Can you have an implant without enough bone?
Yes: a lack of bone is restored by a graft, or bypassed with zygomatic implants in cases of severe atrophy.
At what age can you get an implant?
Once bone growth is complete, generally after 18. There is no upper age limit if health allows.
